A grand new entrance to a property in Wembdon!
The front entrance to this beautiful property in Wembdon was uninspiring to say the least. The design was dated and crumbling steps and retaining walls meant that the site was also potentially unsafe.
Sloping front gardens are a common site in Wembdon and this one was no exception to the rule. Previous attempts at a planting plan had not worked well. Visitors to the property were greeted by a couple of tired shrubs and some exposed weed suppressant matting.
Our solution to the problem was to create a stylish curved stairway leading to a broad flat paved area beside the front door. We began with a 3D garden design to show what Dan was visualising for the space.
The crumbling retaining wall was removed and replaced by stronger structure. Cream coloured render was applied to tie the garden in with the property itself.
The steps were built using natural sandstone pavers with honeyed tones of cream, ochre, russet and light grey. The curved shape means that the steps can have wide treads and relatively low riser. Ideal for anyone who is trying to reach the front door with heavy shopping bags in either hand.
At the top of the steps is a wide platform flanked by planting beds and a sturdy balustrade for safety. The border has been planted with easy maintenance plants that will enjoy the mild climate in Wembdon.
The over grown privacy hedge was a little scruffy but did an excellent job of blocking out the sound of Wembdon street traffic. Major excavations for the hard landscaping and drainage works had disturbed the roots. So we removed the old plants and replaced them Photinia ‘red robin’.
A New Front Garden For This Wembdon Home
The result of Dan’s clever design and the team’s hard work is a stylish front garden with easy access via a welcoming set of natural stone steps. We’re rather proud of this project.
