Wells Traditional Family Garden

This Wells traditional family garden transformed a difficult and sloping outdoor space into a practical and beautiful garden for the whole family to enjoy.

The existing levels made the garden difficult to use, so SilverBirch Gardens redesigned the layout to improve access and create a stronger connection between the different areas. Oak timbers, a beautiful circular lawn, new steps and generous planting areas now give the garden structure, character and functionality.

A Traditional Family Garden in Wells

We designed the garden around the needs of the family and the challenging shape of the site.

The steep levels previously limited how the family could use the garden. We worked with the existing slope rather than trying to remove its character, creating a series of connected spaces that are easier to access and enjoy.

The new layout combines traditional garden design with practical features for family life. Curved shapes, natural materials and generous planting create a relaxed setting that complements the property.

Transforming a Difficult Sloping Garden

The sloping garden presented the main design challenge. Its changing levels made movement through the garden difficult and restricted access to areas that were previously underused.

We introduced a more structured layout that makes the different levels work together. Carefully positioned steps and oak timber features create clear connections between the main lawn and the new planting areas.

This approach transformed a difficult-to-use space into a garden that the family can explore, enjoy and maintain more easily.

Oak Timbers Create Structure

We used oak timbers to help define the different levels within the garden.

The natural timber adds warmth and texture while creating strong visual boundaries between the various spaces. Oak also complements the traditional character of the property and works naturally alongside the planting.

The timber features help give the garden a sense of permanence while making the most of the existing slope.

A Beautiful Circular Lawn

A beautiful circular lawn now forms the centrepiece of the garden.

The curved shape creates a softer feel and contrasts with the straight lines of the steps and timber features. It also provides a generous open area where the family can relax, play and enjoy the garden.

The circular lawn gives the overall design a clear focal point and helps bring the surrounding spaces together.

Steps to a New Planting Area

We introduced new steps to provide practical access between the lawn and a previously difficult-to-reach part of the garden.

The steps lead towards a new planting area, making better use of the available space while creating a natural transition between the different levels.

The new planting area adds colour, texture and seasonal interest. As the plants mature, they will help soften the timber and hard landscaping while creating a richer and more established garden.

A Garden Designed for Family Life

This Wells traditional family garden combines attractive design with practical outdoor living.

The circular lawn provides space for family activities, while the new planting areas create opportunities to explore and enjoy the garden. The improved routes make it easier to move between the different spaces.

By responding to the existing slope, we created a garden that feels natural rather than forced. Every level now contributes to the overall design.
