From Sketch to Sanctuary: How a Bespoke Garden Is Designed and Built

 In Garden Design, Landscaping, Uncategorised

Creating a truly bespoke garden is not simply about choosing beautiful plants or laying a new patio. It is a caredully considered journey – one that transforms the ideas in your head into a living, breathing outdoor sanctuary.

SilverBirch Gardens work with householders throughout Somerset, Bridgewater and Glastonbury who want more than a garden makeover. They want a space that reflects their home, their lifestyle and the surrounding landscape – built with craftsmanship and materials that will stand the test of time.

Here’s how that transformation unfolds….

Listening First: The Initial Consultation

Every exceptional garden begins with a conversation.

Before any design starts to take shape, Dan will visit the garden and chat with you. He’ll want to get a really good understanding of what’s needed and what will best suit the space. Together with you he will explore…

  • How you want to use the space
  • Your personal taste and style
  • The architecture and landscape that surrounds your garden
  • Any challenges that need to be overcome – eg slopes, drainage issues, shade, poor soil, lack of privacy
  • Your long term plans for the garden. (We like to futureproof our garden designs)

Gardens in Somerset vary enormously. From rural properties overlooking open countryside to town gardens in Bridgewater and even period homes in this beautiful part of the country. Each setting influences the design.

This stage of the garden design and build process is all about uncovering potential and identifying the opportunities that you may not yet have noticed.

A floating deck brings visitors closer to this small pond where a fountain bubbles gently and koi carp glide beneath the surface. Very bold and very zen.

The Concept: From Ideas to Scaled Design

Once Dan has a good feel for the vision, he’ll translate that into a scaled down concept design. More often than not, Dan prefers to design in 3D which is far easier for everyone to visualise. The design will show:

  • Spatial layout and flow – where features sit in relation to each other, to the property, and to its boundaries. The concept plan shows paths and allows everyone to imagine themselves moving around the space.
  • Terraces and level changes – very few gardens in Somerset are flat. It’s inevetable that there will be some level changes to negotiate with steps, terraces and/or slopes.
  • Focal points and features.
  • Initial thoughts on materials such as paving, decking, lawns and soft landscaping

A bespoke garden must feel connected to its home. In this part of Somerset that often means selecting materials that complement traditional building stone and period architecture.

One material we love to incorporate is locally sourced Hamstone . Its warm, honeyed tones sit beautifully alongside the natural stone and brick commonly found across Bridgwater, Glastonbury and the surrounding villages. Dan feels strongly that using materials with local provenance ensures the garden feels established rather than imposed. And of course, he’s a great advocate of supporting local quarrying businesses.

With the concept design the garden begins to take shape and the excitement is usually palpable. This is the time to really think about the design, sleep on it, consider it, and make any layout changes before moving on to the next stage of the process.

Technical Planning: The Hidden Foundations of Quality

A beautiful garden is only ever as good as what lies beneath it.

Before construction begins, we carefully plan:

  • Groundworks and excavation
  • Sub-base preparation
  • Drainage solutions
  • Load-bearing considerations (including wind loading on upright structures)
  • Service routes for lighting and irrigation

Somerset’s soil conditions can vary significantly, particularly in areas closer to the Levels. Proper preparation ensures patios remain level, walls remain stable, and surfaces drain correctly for decades to come.

This is where quality workmanship truly separates a bespoke build from a short-term installation.

Material Selection: Local, Durable, Timeless

Material choice is about more than aesthetics – it is about longevity, sustainability and architectural harmony.

Where possible, and whilst respecting your preferences, we prioritise:

  • Locally sourced stone
  • Reclaimed and/or recyclable materials
  • British-grown timber
  • Quality aggregates from regional suppliers
  • Natural materials that weather beautifully
  • Healthy, British-grown plants that are perfectly suited to the soil type and microclimate in each part of the garden.

Incorporating Hamstone and limestone into patios, walls, steps, and detailing not only supports local quarries but also ensures cohesion with Somerset’s traditional architecture.

Where materials echo the tones and textures of the surrounding area, the result is timeless. Having said that, as a designer, Dan loves to think outside of the box, using traditional materials in new and exciting ways.

Construction: Craftsmanship in Action

Would you expect bespoke clothing or furnishings to be made by unsupervised amateurs? Absolutely not!  And the same principal applies in landscaping. At SilverBirch Gardens, our teams are highly skilled and even more highly motivated to take pride in their work. Less experienced landscapers are carefully supervised to ensure that they can learn best practice and develop their own skillset over time.

Only once the garden design is finalised, the materials specified and the project planned can the construction phase begin.

This stage requires precision and patience – even for the bits that will eventually be hidden underground, for these are the foundation of the whole garden.

  • Accurate setting out
  • Clean stone cutting and joining
  • Perfectly aligned paving
  • Attention to every edge and finish

Whether construction contemporary sunken gardens, bespoke farmhouse gardens, or unique driveway designs, our focus remains the same:  detail, durability and refinement.

Every layer matters, from the foundations to the final pointing.

Planting: Bringing the Space to Life

Once the structural elements are complete, planting softens and animates the space.

Our bespoke planting schemes consider:

  • Seasonal interest
  • Texture and movement
  • Structure throughout winter
  • Wildlife habit and sustainability
  • Soil conditions and aspect
  • Long-term growth patterns
  • Privacy and noice amelioration
  • Manageability
  • Style and flair

The aim is not simply immediate impact, but a garden that matures gracefully, year after year.

The Final Reveal: From Plan to Sanctuary

The most rewarding moment of any garden design and build project is seeing the transformation complete and handing the new and improved outdoor space over to its rightful owner to be enjoyed.

What began as a conversation is now:

  • A dining terrace that catches the evening sun
  • Steps and paths that guide you around the landscape
  • Carefully framed views
  • Materials that complement the home
  • A space designed for outdoor living, relaxing and wellbeing

A truly bespoke garden does not feel ‘new’ – it feels as though it has always belonged.

Why Invest in a Bespoke Garden?

A professionally designed and bilt garden offers:

  • Increased kerb appeal and potentially increased property values too
  • Extended living space
  • Long-term durability
  • Architectural harmony
  • A daily sense of calm and enjoyment

Investing in quality landscaping is not just about aesthetics, it’s about lifestyle, practicality, wellbeing, self-esteem and happiness – and in our view, those things are priceless!
