Transforming a Challenging New Build Garden into a Family-Friendly Outdoor Space

When the owners of this new build garden in Bridgwater, Somerset contacted SilverBirch Gardens, they had a garden that looked more like an extension of the building site than a finished outdoor space.

Like many new-build gardens, the plot presented several challenges. The garden was overlooked by surrounding houses, the standard brick boundary walls created a stark backdrop, and the soil quality was so poor that establishing a healthy natural lawn would have been extremely difficult.

Our aim was to transform the space into a private, welcoming and practical garden that the whole family could use and enjoy.

The finished garden combines hardwood slatted screening, natural oak, artificial grass, lush planting, a water feature and a Corten steel feature to create a garden with structure, privacy and year-round interest.

The Challenges of New Build Gardens

A new-build garden can look like a blank canvas, but it often comes with challenges that aren’t immediately obvious.

During construction, existing topsoil is commonly removed and construction traffic can compact the exposed subsoil. Imported topsoil can also vary in quality. The result can be a shallow or poor growing layer, compacted ground and an unsuitable environment for establishing plants and lawns. The RHS specifically identifies these issues as common considerations when improving new-build gardens.

For homeowners, this can create a frustrating situation. A newly laid lawn might initially look attractive, but poor soil preparation, compaction, drainage problems or insufficient topsoil can make it difficult to maintain a healthy lawn over time.

In this Bridgwater garden, the soil quality was particularly poor. Rather than forcing a natural lawn into ground that was unlikely to support it successfully, we looked at how the garden could provide a practical and attractive alternative.

Creating Privacy in an Overlooked New Build Garden

Privacy was one of the biggest considerations when designing this garden.

New-build developments often have houses positioned relatively close together, with neighbouring properties looking directly into gardens and living spaces. Without careful planning, a new garden can feel exposed and overlooked.

We addressed this by introducing hardwood slatted screening to hide the existing brick walls and create a warmer, more natural backdrop.

Large mature trees were carefully planted to block sightlines from surrounding houses

The timber screening adds height, texture and visual interest while helping the garden feel more enclosed and private.

Rather than simply trying to hide the surrounding buildings, we turned the boundaries into an important part of the garden design.

Curved Oak Raised Bed

To soften the strong lines of the new-build property, we introduced a large curving raised bed constructed from oak timbers.

The sweeping shape creates a natural flow through the garden and contrasts with the straight lines of the house and boundary walls.

The raised bed also provided an opportunity to introduce substantial planting into a garden where the existing soil presented significant challenges.

Oak adds warmth and character while the curved form gives the garden a more established and organic feel.

A Practical Alternative to a Natural Lawn

One of the most important decisions on this project was replacing the tired existing lawn with artificial grass.

The poor quality of the soil made it difficult to create the healthy growing conditions needed for a good natural lawn. Rather than repeatedly trying to establish grass in unsuitable ground, we created a practical, hard-wearing alternative that the family could use throughout the year.

The artificial lawn provides a clean, consistent surface for children and family activities while significantly reducing the ongoing maintenance associated with a natural lawn.

For some new-build gardens, improving the soil and establishing a natural lawn will be the right solution. For others, particularly where soil quality, drainage, maintenance requirements or usage make a traditional lawn impractical, artificial grass can form part of a well-considered garden design.

Lush planting

Lush Planting Brings the Garden to Life

Although the lawn provides a practical central area, planting plays a major role in the character of this garden.

We introduced lush, layered planting around the garden to soften the hard landscaping, add colour and texture, and create a more established feel.

The planting works particularly well against the warm tones of the oak and the dark timber screening.

By combining different heights, forms and textures, we created planting areas that help the garden feel mature rather than like a typical new-build plot.

Water Feature Creates a Calming Focal Point

We incorporated a small water feature into the garden to introduce movement and sound.

Water can provide an important sensory element within a garden, creating a calming focal point while adding another layer of interest.

In this garden, the water feature works alongside the planting and timber elements rather than dominating the space.

Corten Steel Feature

A Corten steel wall feature was incorporated into the hardwood slatted screening to provide a contrasting focal point.

The rich, weathered tones of Corten steel work particularly well with the natural oak and planting, creating a contemporary detail within the otherwise soft and family-friendly garden.

The feature demonstrates how carefully selected materials can add personality to a relatively compact new-build garden.

A Garden Designed for Family Life

The finished garden is now a completely different space.

What began as an overlooked and uninspiring new-build garden with poor soil has become a usable family garden with privacy, planting, character and practical outdoor space.

The artificial grass provides a durable area for everyday family use, while the curved oak raised bed, lush planting, water feature and Corten steel detail create visual interest throughout the garden.

The hardwood screening has also transformed the boundaries, replacing the stark appearance of the brick walls with a much warmer and more considered finish.

Most importantly, the garden now works for the people who use it.

The Finished Result

This new-build garden transformation in Bridgwater shows that even a challenging plot can become a beautiful and practical outdoor space with the right design approach.

Rather than treating the problems of the site as limitations, we used them to inform the design.

The result combines:

  • Hardwood slatted screening for privacy
  • Oak timber to create a curved raised bed
  • Artificial grass for a practical family lawn area
  • Lush, layered planting
  • A small water feature
  • A Corten steel feature
  • A more private and welcoming garden environment

The finished space has given the family a garden they can actually use and enjoy.
