Three back garden designs for relaxing outdoor spaces

 In Garden Design, Uncategorised

These three back garden designs are very different, but they all have the same goal, to create relaxing outdoor spaces that allow homeowners to make the very most of their rear gardens.

Without further ado, lets take a look at these three inspirational back garden designs.

  1. Beautiful back garden that feels like a spa resort

Have you ever been on a holiday where you wished you could bottle up the ambience and release it at home?

I certainly have!

That’s the vibe I tried to create in this beautiful garden designed and built for our clients in Woolavington. Using a mix of natural timber, beautiful stone pavers and a contemporary pergola along with exotic planting and ambient evening lighting, the finished garden is reminiscent of long, languid days, twilight meals on the terrace, beautiful sunsets and romantic seclusion.

It’s a moderately sized garden that was once home to an uninspiring lawn and a rather tired looking shelter.

The lawn has been largely replaced with an outdoor entertaining area comprising built-in seating, a generously sized pergola for shade and shelter and a large fire-pit. Nothing strikes up conversation like a real fire!

By day, my clients use their garden for reading, listening to podcasts and sometimes even working from home. By evening it’s a place for unwinding with a glass of wine and a few salty snacks.

  1. A small back garden with a calm atmosphere

You don’t need to have a big garden to relax in – it just has to feel safe and have a lovely calm ambience. This back garden in Burnham on Sea features lots of curved shapes for a soft yet interesting look and feel.

It’s not an enormous space and has neighbouring properties adjoining three sides, so peace and privacy were of utmost importance.

We used a colour palette comprising blues for calm, greens for serenity and a soft blue-grey stone to create the illusion of more space.

Contrasting textures within the paving create interest in the garden and delineate utility and relaxation areas without the need for physical barriers.

A sturdy bench is positioned in the part of the garden that is least overlooked by neighbours, creating a sense of privacy. And, as the planting matures, garden visitors will feel immersed in nature as they sit out and enjoy the Somerset weather.

  1. The ultimate low maintenance garden for easing away stress

If garden maintenance is a bit of a chore, yet you relax best when the place is tidy, it’s well worth discussing your dilemma with a garden designer. That’s what our clients in Templecombe did. Their good sized back garden was woefully neglected. The sloping lawn was difficult to mow, and although they loved the idea of introducing lots of plants, they didn’t know what to grow and couldn’t decide how set out the planting beds.

My knowledge of landscaping plants and products combined with my designer’s eye came up with a back garden design that was high interest but, low maintenance.

The lower part of the garden has been transformed into a jungle walkway with sturdy steps and handrails doubling up as resting places where my clients can relax and soak up the atmosphere.

I’ve built the steps on the diagonal so that folks can get up close and personal with the plants. A thick mulch around the plants helps to minimise the need for weeding, and an irrigation system with a timer means that watering is a cinch too.

Closer to the house is an artificial grass lawn which provides plenty of space for entertaining but doesn’t demand a lot of attention. Artificial grass does get bad press sometimes, and I understand why, but in some instances, and when it’s properly installed, it can be a real asset to family life.
