Front Garden Makeover in Wembdon
An in depth look at a recent front garden makeover in the pretty village of Wembdon on the edge of the Quantock Hills.
What is a front garden for?
- Off road parking
- To welcome you home
- Easy access to your front door
- Enhance property values
This family in Wembdon felt that their front garden was lacking in three out of four of these essential checkpoints. They asked Silver Birch Gardens to suggest some improvements and quote for the work.
Its hard to love an front garden when it’s uninspiring and impractical.

The challenge
Tired concrete paths, a considerable slope and dated planting were not showing this property in its best light.
The existing path was difficult to negotiate with heavy shopping. And the riser between the path and the front door was uncomfortably high. After dark, it was hard to feel sure-footed on the crumbly concrete.
What we did
Dan Richards from Silver Birch Gardens loves designing sloping gardens and this one was no exception. Gone were the unattractive steps at that tricky angle. Dan designed a new approach from the driveway. A sweeping curve with broad, shallow steps makes carrying shopping from car to house an absolute pleasure.
The width of the terrace beside the house was increased to give a feeling of space. The front door and the garden gate are easily accessed from here. It’s also a great place to contemplate and enjoy the newly planted beds.
We used limestone pavers for a warm, solid and traditional feel with a modern twist.
Rendered retaining walls create a gentle, welcoming ambience whilst making that slope easier to negotiate.
Dan complimented the privacy hedge with some shade tolerant planting in the lower border. The upper terrace is now home with a selection of easy care grasses peeping through limestone chips.
Finally, an attractive balustrade adds a finishing touch and negates any risk of tumbling.
The results
It was a joy to work on this garden and the results speak for themselves. A tired outdated entranceway has now become a real asset to the property and the area around it. The clients love how their challenging slope has been transformed into an interesting feature. Best of all, this front garden now does everything it should do.
